Tech Product Job Market Sees PM Roles Surge, AI Jobs Explode in Early 2026

Despite widespread layoff announcements and concerns about AI's impact on employment, data from early 2026 indicates a robust and evolving tech job market. Key trends include a significant increase in Product Manager (PM) positions, sustained demand for software engineers, and explosive growth in AI-related roles. Conversely, design-related jobs have largely stagnated, remote work opportunities continue to decline, and the Bay Area's importance as a tech hub is growing.

Product Manager Positions Reach Three-Year High

The number of open Product Manager positions at tech companies worldwide has surpassed 7,300 and continues to climb. This figure represents a 75% increase from the low point observed in early 2023 and nearly 20% growth since the beginning of 2026 alone, marking the highest level of open PM roles since 2022.

Engineer Demand Unaffected by AI, Recruitment Surges

Globally, over 67,000 open engineer positions are available at tech companies, with 26,000 in the U.S. alone. While it remains unclear if AI has created more positions or if the number would be higher without AI, the growth rate for open engineer roles has accelerated since the start of the year.

Further supporting this trend, demand for recruiters is also surging, with open positions nearing 2022 peak levels. The recruiter role, which experienced the sharpest decline post-pandemic, has also seen the fastest recovery. This serves as a leading indicator, suggesting that high tech hiring demand is likely to persist.

AI-Related Jobs Experience Explosive Growth

The growth of AI-related jobs is experiencing a "hockey-stick" trajectory, characterized by a sudden and sharp increase after a period of relative flatness. This category encompasses all open positions at AI-driven companies, such as OpenAI and Anthropic, as well as AI-specific roles within non-AI companies, like an AI Product Manager at Figma. Demand for AI engineers and AI product managers is particularly high, indicating a favorable environment for entering the AI field.

Design Roles Stagnate Amid Shifting Demand

In contrast to the growth in PM and engineering roles, design-related jobs have largely stagnated since early 2023. The number of open positions remains modest, with approximately 5,700 globally, fewer than for PMs and engineers. This stagnation, which began two years after the release of ChatGPT, suggests a potential link to AI's impact on development speed and traditional design processes.

A notable shift has occurred in the demand ratio between PMs and designers. Since mid-2023, the industry has transitioned from having more open designer positions to more open PM positions. The demand for PMs now outpaces that for designers by 1.27 times, indicating a reshaping of organizational structures by AI.

Bay Area's Importance Continues to Rise

The Bay Area maintains its position as the leading hub for tech jobs, with its share of positions continuing to expand. Over 20% of engineer and designer roles are located in the Bay Area, while PM positions exceed 23%—a 50% increase since 2022. This proportion continues to climb across all three job types.

Additionally, one-third of all AI open positions are concentrated in the Bay Area, a proportion that has remained largely constant over the past few years. New York has solidified its status as the world's second-largest tech employment hub, despite lacking headquarters for leading tech companies. Internationally, Bengaluru, London, Tel Aviv, and Singapore remain key centers for tech talent.

Remote Work Opportunities Continue to Shrink

The peak for remote work positions occurred in 2022, when approximately 35% of PM positions, 26% of engineer positions, and 28% of design positions offered remote options. These figures have since dropped to 25%, 19%, and 23%, respectively, representing a 20% to 25% decrease from their peak. While remote work remains an option, it is available on a smaller scale and often comes with country, region, and time zone restrictions.

Layoffs Persist Amid Overall Tech Job Growth

As of early 2026, 184 tech company layoffs have impacted 57,606 individuals. In 2025, 783 layoffs affected 245,953 people, averaging 674 per day. While the current year's pace is comparable to the past two years, most large tech companies' headcounts have remained stable or even slightly increased compared to the previous year.

The combined data on open positions and layoffs suggests a narrative of growth within the tech industry. Despite ongoing layoffs, hiring is recovering strongly, with growth rates appearing to exceed the rate of job reductions. The increased demand for recruiters further supports the likelihood of continued momentum in tech hiring. This indicates a personnel reshuffle rather than a reduction, as teams and companies adapt to evolving skill requirements.
