OpenAI Launches GPT-5.2 in Three Versions, Excelling in 44 Professional Tasks
OpenAI has introduced GPT-5.2, a new iteration of its large language model, available in three distinct versions: Instant, Thinking, and Pro. The company states that this series represents its most powerful collection of professional knowledge work models to date, outperforming industry professionals in 44 types of knowledge-based jobs with clearly defined tasks.
GPT-5.2 Instant is designed for daily tasks, offering optimizations in information retrieval, operational guidance, technical document writing, and translation, while maintaining a conversational style. GPT-5.2 Thinking targets deep work scenarios, aiming to complete complex tasks such as programming development, long document summarization, file upload Q&A, and mathematical logical deduction. GPT-5.2 Pro is positioned as OpenAI's most intelligent and reliable option for high-difficulty problems, though it entails longer waiting times for higher-quality responses.
Overall, GPT-5.2 features upgrades in general intelligence, long-context understanding, agent tool calling, and visual capabilities. OpenAI claims the model performs better in end-to-end execution of complex real-world tasks compared to previous models. Its capabilities have been enhanced across areas including spreadsheet creation, presentation building, code writing, image recognition, long-text understanding, tool calling, and managing multi-step projects.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman noted on social media that the model represents significant progress since GPT-5.1. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella confirmed that GPT-5.2 is now integrated into Copilot, Microsoft Foundry, and Copilot Studio.
The Instant, Thinking, and Pro versions of GPT-5.2 are rolling out on the ChatGPT platform, with priority access for paid subscribers. For programming interfaces, these versions are immediately available to all developers. GPT-5.1 will remain accessible to paid users as a legacy model for three months before its official retirement.
Economic Efficiency and Professional Performance
OpenAI emphasized that a core objective for GPT-5.2 was to unlock greater economic value. GPT-5.2 Thinking is highlighted as the most suitable model for practical professional applications and the first to achieve or surpass human expert performance. In the GDPval evaluation, which assesses specific knowledge work tasks across 44 professions, GPT-5.2 Thinking achieved a new high score.
According to human expert reviews of GDPval knowledge work tasks, GPT-5.2 Thinking performed at or above the level of top industry professionals in 70.9% of projects. These tasks included creating presentations and spreadsheets. When completing GDPval-related tasks, GPT-5.2 Thinking's output speed is more than 11 times that of professionals, at less than 1% of the cost. This suggests that with human oversight, GPT-5.2 can significantly assist in professional work. One GDPval evaluator commented on the output quality, noting an "exciting and visible leap," resembling work completed by a professional staff, despite minor errors in one deliverable.
