AI-Powered Appliances at AWE 2024 Showcase Proactive Home Assistance

The China Appliance & Consumer Electronics Expo (AWE), held from March 12 to 15, highlighted artificial intelligence as a central theme, demonstrating a shift in AI's role within home appliances from conversational interfaces to active assistance. Refrigerators now plan ingredient usage, washing machines identify clothing care needs, and robot vacuums are designed to climb stairs, moving smart home technology closer to the visions depicted in science fiction.

This year's AWE, one of the world's three major appliance and consumer electronics exhibitions, emphasized home appliances. It featured an "Innovation Technology Exhibition Area" for the first time, showcasing humanoid robots, chips, and AI hardware. The exhibition spanned approximately 170,000 square meters and attracted over 1,200 companies, including traditional brands like Haier, Hisense, and TCL, alongside AI technology firms such as Huawei, Dreame, and Roborock.
AI Integration in Major Home Appliances
Refrigerators are evolving beyond passive storage units into active ingredient managers. Haier introduced its Seeker series AI multi-compartment modular refrigerator, which the company states achieves L4 (autonomous decision-making) intelligence. Equipped with "AI Eye 2.0," the Seeker identifies ingredients upon placement, suggests storage locations, and synchronizes inventory with a mobile application. It can also recommend recipes based on stored items and link with other smart kitchen appliances for automated cooking. Hisense also presented AI refrigerators with similar ingredient management and expiration date monitoring features.

Washing machines are incorporating AI to automate laundry processes. Hisense's Full-Family Drum U7S washing machine allows users to issue voice commands, such as specifying stain types or desired completion times, and the AI automatically adjusts parameters like water temperature and detergent dosage. The machine can identify hundreds of fabric types and generate tailored care programs. TCL's AI Super Drum washing machine supports dialect commands, learns family washing habits, and monitors the washing process.
Televisions are transforming from display screens into smart home hubs. AI assistants are now standard in many mid-to-high-end TVs, enabling natural language interaction for content search and device control. Changhong AI TV, for example, integrates OpenClaw, allowing it to execute complex multi-scenario commands, such as simultaneously starting a movie, activating movie mode, and adjusting air conditioning. This functionality positions TVs as potential control centers for whole-house intelligence.

AI in Small Appliances and Robotics
The small appliance sector at AWE demonstrated diverse AI applications. Coffee Freedom showcased the Moyin SF1 Ultra, an AI voice-controlled coffee machine that integrates Qianwen and a proprietary large language model. Users can order coffee by voice, and the AI brewing system can replicate 127 coffee flavors. Joyoung and Baidu Smart Cloud announced a partnership, presenting their "AI Smart Enjoy Series" of small appliances, which integrate with Wenxin Large Model 5.0. An AI-powered air fryer, for instance, offers voice interaction, recommends cooking parameters based on ingredients, and provides dietary advice.
Robots are increasingly being designed for home integration. Ecovacs unveiled "Bajie," a home service butler robot with a sliding base and gripping arm capable of tidying items and retrieving objects. Utilizing the OpenClaw intelligent agent, "Bajie" can plan tasks and understand spatial logic within a home environment. Ecovacs Chairman Qian Dongqi indicated that this robot is expected to be available for homes within three years. Dreame showcased a range of products, including robot vacuums capable of climbing stairs and clothes-folding robots. Fotile introduced a robot kitchen featuring high-precision robotic arms for tasks like cup positioning and dishwashing, and humanoid robots for cooking functions such as pouring oil and stir-frying. Guo Renjie, founder and CEO of Enjoy Technology, emphasized that safety, full automation, and the ability to solve specific user needs are crucial for robots to gain widespread home adoption.

Emerging AI Hardware: Smart Glasses
AI hardware manufacturers exhibited an increased presence at AWE, particularly with smart glasses. Alibaba's Qianwen G1 glasses were available for demonstration, offering functions such as ordering takeout, booking hotels, and making payments. RayNeo Innovation, in collaboration with Amap, released "RayNeo Smart Life," an application for RayNeo X3 Pro AR glasses that displays Amap's "Street Scan List" information. Boss Electric showcased AI cooking glasses that identify ingredients and provide real-time cooking instructions. Dreame launched "Aqua 100" smart swimming goggles, which display real-time data like swimming duration and heart rate, and generate personalized training plans using Dreame's sports health large model.
The AWE 2024 exhibition indicated a trend of AI moving from the digital realm into the physical world, transforming home appliances into more perceptive and proactive household partners. The integration of L4-level intelligent agents capable of autonomous decision-making and execution suggests a future where the boundaries between technologies like refrigerators, washing machines, TVs, and robots will converge, with competition potentially centering on the strength of integrated home AI systems.
